Extreme Knitting

Today we wound up a family weekend away with a trip to Taunton to see my in laws. And very lovely it was too!

And here’s me, knitting cable in a moving van while playing eye spy – how’s that for extreme knitting! I also worked back stitches through several rows where it became evident I got the stitch wrong. Knitting like a Boss, that’s how I feel (I’d strongly recommend Fearless knitting from Craftsy). It’s rare I feel accomplished at anything. I usually I dismiss it as being easy or meaningless when ever I could feel accomplished so I’m super glad to be able to acknowledge not only the personality trait but also revise it.

Anyway, I finished this gorgeous extra wide ear warmer… I love this yarn. Gutted it’s no longer available; I’ve traveled through all the knitting sights and ebay to no avail. I’m not sure this one will be for sale.., always a good sign when I get possessive…

Ooooh a nice cup of tea!

Nothing like a nice cup of tea after a wet and windy day. Check out these lovely mitts too, so cosy and just the thing for the first ice skating session in over 20 years! Not that I got to wear them much; the little once had them on for most of it!

Anyway skating around reminded me of the roller discos we went to as kids at The Ritzy in Plymouth, the hair, the make up, the ra at skirts and of course the leg warmers. I don’t have a very good track record for knitting leg warmers but I’ve been inspired! I’ve got some of this lovely red sparkly yarn at home, or maybe some super chunky… hmmmmπŸ€”

Happy Birthday to MEEEE!!

I’m 46 today. No shame there. Many people aren’t that lucky, and luckier still I get to enjoy it with my wonderful husband. I taught Pilates first thing and the kind and ever thoughtful ladies (and gent) remembered and signed a card and gave me a lovely rose plant 🌹. I’ll be teaching classes later on today but I’m good with that. It doesn’t feel like work, none of what I do does; how good is that!

So here I am working on my Imp Hat (for kids) ; I initially did it top down and now seeing how it works bottom up. Then we’re going out for lunch before picking up our kind and funny daughter. Today feels like the best day ever!!!

Work in progress

The little one loves the mitts I’ve knitted as part of a kids winter trio. I’ve just finished the hat and already made the scarf.

She’s claimed them as hers which is just as well since she’s lost her winter gear from last year. I think I’m literally going to have to sew it all to her coat so we don’t lose them πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I was being really efficient and writing down the pattern for the hat and then I got a bit distracted, I was FaceTiming with my husband. Then I was knitting on the street prior to busking … I’m going to have to sit down and work it out.., ho hum….

R&R

I’m having a wonderful time with our little girl camping. It’s a fantastic site, right by a river in the woods… fires allowed and a toilet and shower block, what more do you need?

Last night after setting up camp we went for a riverside walk in the wood. We ate the sweetest blackberries (which we had with our breakfast) and then we saw real live, flapping around our heads bats πŸ¦‡πŸ˜.

Today little one has made friends and is running around have a ball and I’m taking in the view while I work up the ‘Flame’ scarf in a different yarn, seeing how the pattern works and how much yarn it takes. I love this bit of the design process, it’s always more interesting that the first time around, sometimes making little adjustments, sometimes frogging because it just doesn’t work for some reason 🐸.

Life is good.

Knitting not swimming

Don’t get me wrong, I love swimming. I find it meditative. But that’s when I’m doing lengths on my own. It’s just me and the water and my mind quietens. Swimming with the girl is entirely different and not at all meditative.

Ok the joy of watching the girl grow in confidence in the water in wonderful, and the socialising with the other mums is great. But some days I just don’t want have to get wet to do it.

Why? Oh you know… There’s the trying to get changed before the girl flings open the door to the communal changing room, then there’s the getting cold and have I mentioned getting cold oh and staying cold for hours. So while I don’t hate it, some days I don’t relish it. Today was one of those days!

Today the Gods were with me … she went swimming with another parent. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ. I very gratefully watched her from the comfort of the cafe, in the warm. I drank coffee, I started knitting a tension square, I could be proud and warm at the same time.

I still don’t know what to do with the yarn. It’s ‘too nice’ you know that feeling? Like the dinner service you keep for best. But at least now I know how many stitches and rows it’ll take to knit whatever it is. It feels summery some how. So I’ll wait I guess until the whatever it is comes to me. Ommmm πŸ™πŸΌβ€οΈ

Delicious Decisions….

Just look at this lovely yarn….. LOOK AT IT!!!!!!!!!! So good you could almost taste it!!! I can’t decide what to do with it…. it’s just so lovely. It varies in thickness and knits up on 6mm needles….

That red and orange; it’s like a fire right there. I don’t normally go for the hot colours like this, I’m more of a green and blue kinda person but this yarn sang to me…. it shouted YOU NEED ME!!!!! I guess that’s what reds and oranges do huh!?

This is more my style, not so easy to knit with as its got little sequins in but it makes up a luxurious fabric …

Both are from my favourite yarn shop in Bath. It’s an Italian Tailors and they sell Italian yarn, it’s great to find different things…

Anyway I’m thinking lightweight summer wrap for the cool evenings (and let’s face it, days in the UK!) …..

Life in colour

I’ve really enjoyed knitting these loose fitting hats. The pattern is for an Aran weight yarn, or any yarn that works well on 5mm needles. That means some of the more interesting DK yarns can work well too.

The hat suits long or short hair which is unusual as hats are usually either or. Also multi-coloured yarns work really well, I’m not usually a fan of yarns with a wide variation of colours but I love these. And they use around 50g of yarn which is ideal for using up stash yarns. This hat pattern is a keeper for the book I’m putting together.

With summer just around the corner (ok we we shin deep in snow last weekend with more forecast for Easter) I’m turning my attention to some lighter weight knits. Let’s be honest though, it’s a rare day in the UK when you don’t take an extra layer ‘just in case’…

So I’ve done the tension square and sums for a loose and lightweight jumper. Now we all know my sums can be a bit off so I’ve checked and checked again and I’m pretty certain it’ll be a nice fit for a UK 10- 14 …. watch this space …..

Shhhhh!

I LOVE this yarn. I’ve knitted the cable ear warmer and am making a start on the hat.

My brain was jangled after a busy day and I needed some quiet after the girl went to bed. In the quiet of the living room I sat on the floor and worked out how the decrease might work. I say might because things can sometimes change in the actual knitting. Feeling already quieter, I did some yoga with my favourite YouTube channel yoga with Adriene …. and now I feel positively serene!

Have I mentioned that I LOVE this yarn. The picture doesn’t do the colours justice ( I’m all about colour). The cable looks amazing and I’m actually inspired to knit a jumper… anyway now to keep the quiet in my soul with a bit of knitting β€οΈπŸ™πŸΌ

Great expectations!

This is a wonderful Italian chunky wool/ alpaca/ acrylic yarn on 6.5mm needles. I’ve knitted the tension square to help me with my design for a close fitting hat with detachable ear warmer.

I really love the definition of the stitches and the soft mossy colours. It’s funny, I react strongly to colour. A while ago I was using some brown chunky yarn. On the face of it the yarn was attractive, and I’d knitted other items in differences colours of the same yarn. Once I started with it I was disappointed but I just couldn’t put my finger on why. Eventually I realised, there just wasn’t enough warmth. So anyway I’m really looking forward to working with this yarn.
