Work in progress

The little one loves the mitts I’ve knitted as part of a kids winter trio. I’ve just finished the hat and already made the scarf.

She’s claimed them as hers which is just as well since she’s lost her winter gear from last year. I think I’m literally going to have to sew it all to her coat so we don’t lose them 😂😂

I was being really efficient and writing down the pattern for the hat and then I got a bit distracted, I was FaceTiming with my husband. Then I was knitting on the street prior to busking … I’m going to have to sit down and work it out.., ho hum….

It’s in the bag!

I know I’m not alone when it comes to having a bag crammed full of useful things. I’ve got this useful little inner thing so in theory I can transfer all my stuff from one bag to another. In reality I only use one … my gorgeous Dr Marten rucksack🤩🤩🤩. Enough room there for everything and the knitting! So what’s in my bag ….?

Snakes and ladders / playing cards – good when waiting for food to be served while out with the little one

Make up – sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t

Note pad and pens – for ummm notes and stuff

Earphones – actually mostly pointless but just in case you know…

AA Battery – ummm not at all useful I’m not even sure if it works

Crochet hook – well, mistakes happen🙄😱

Hand sanitizer – folk can be really disgusting

Wool needle – for sewing up; don’t mind if I do, I’m finishing off a birthday gift for a good friend. A fellow Virgo.

Supervising & not looking

This weekend has been hectic. The girl has a better social life than me, mind you that’s not difficult.

Towards the end of the day she was playing outside with a friend. They’re still too young to be playing out near the road on their own and it was cold so I climbed into my trusty (not rusty) van and watched.

I’m working on some gorgeous soft storage pots in a super chunky merino / acrylic mix. It’s a great yarn, basically you’re knitting an i-cord and it’s really robust.

It was lovely to be knitting the Freyja pattern again. It’s got a wonderful rhythm to it. Also I can knit without looking, well for most of the time anyway. So I watched as they gathered up all sorts of stuff from the house, dumping it on the grass verge in some elaborate game. It was fascinating to watch but I didn’t want them to feel watched. Wouldn’t have happened if I’d been scrolling through my phone at the time….

Knitting not swimming

Don’t get me wrong, I love swimming. I find it meditative. But that’s when I’m doing lengths on my own. It’s just me and the water and my mind quietens. Swimming with the girl is entirely different and not at all meditative.

Ok the joy of watching the girl grow in confidence in the water in wonderful, and the socialising with the other mums is great. But some days I just don’t want have to get wet to do it.

Why? Oh you know… There’s the trying to get changed before the girl flings open the door to the communal changing room, then there’s the getting cold and have I mentioned getting cold oh and staying cold for hours. So while I don’t hate it, some days I don’t relish it. Today was one of those days!

Today the Gods were with me … she went swimming with another parent. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. I very gratefully watched her from the comfort of the cafe, in the warm. I drank coffee, I started knitting a tension square, I could be proud and warm at the same time.

I still don’t know what to do with the yarn. It’s ‘too nice’ you know that feeling? Like the dinner service you keep for best. But at least now I know how many stitches and rows it’ll take to knit whatever it is. It feels summery some how. So I’ll wait I guess until the whatever it is comes to me. Ommmm 🙏🏼❤️

Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s Mother’s Day. The shelves have been full of weird cuddly toys and sloganed tat for weeks now. I’ve said it before, no mother wants that, of course they’ll appreciate the thought, especially if the little angel has chosen it themselves (one time my little one bought me a paw patrol figure and vehicle – don’t ask me which one – I have no idea). I feel so lucky, the school helped the little one make a lovely card and she went to the trouble of hiding it until today. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love working in greens, it’s my favourite colour… the colour of the heart chakra, it resonates with me. And look – not only some glorious tulips but some sumptuous yarn to play with. I’ve already started a boho hat in the light green. Mine. Not for sale. I might even get some leg warmer mojo on the go. Also not for sale.

Anyway, best crack on … stitches to knit, work to admire!

Mmmmmmm!!! Delicious

The little one and I are en route to a family birthday by train! Exciting times! We have our magazines and newspapers and we’re waiting for our connection.

Looking at the live information from the train company it’s standing room only so I’m grateful we have seats booked. We’ve got felt tip pens, paper, colouring books at the ready and that’s just for me!!! Haha! The small one is in love with Moana at the moment and is pouring over the Moana magazine; and me?

I’m enjoying a Starbucks decaf flat white in my mug muffler prototype… I love the matt black finish. What do you think?

We’ve turned the corner’

My wonderful little angel shrieked with joy when she opened the front door this morning. “Take a picture!” She insisted.

Just look at that sun on the bare winter trees! Moments later it was gone but how welcome! We have officially turned the corner towards longer days. Also I’ve finished work now for Christmas 🎄😃😃.

Last market✔️

Last busking ✔️

Last project✔️

All done.

And now is time to kick back and enjoy the Christmas preparations with Alice. The shopping is mostly done, the woods is just about ready so it’s mainly wrapping and finishing touches. Jerri, my husband will be back Christmas Eve and then it’s properly the holidays! Family time. Time for friends.

And then it’ll be time to reflect on the year. The progress made, there’s plenty to be proud of. But also what’s important for the coming year, what I want to do more of, what I want to change.

If I don’t get around to blogging before Christmas Day, which I might not have a wonderful time. 🎄❤️🙏🏼

Home Spun – capes and family capers

I’m really enjoying knitting with the Erika Knight Maxi wool… a few rookie errors

1) don’t rub your eyes while knitting if you’re allergic to wool….

2) don’t try and wind the hank in to a ball while standing up at a windy market…

3) don’t let your five year old ANYWHERE NEAR IT when trying to untangle the mess you made at the market

Yesterday I discovered that an extra pair of hands ‘Little House on the Prairie’ style works wonderfully especially when said 5 year old happily playing elsewhere and a you have a nice cup of earl grey and some malted milk biscuits on the go!

I’ve also taken to knitting in the kitchen because the spirited 5 year old wants to learn to knit and has decided that the cape I’m knitting is the ideal place to start. Me: let me start you off with these needles here [offers some nice child friendly needles and yarn] no mummy, I’ll finish that for you. Just no.

I’m starting to shape the shoulders and debating how I’m going to do the neckline… I’ve plenty of drawings but being quite kinaesthetic I’m not entirely sure how to do it until I get there so that’ll have to wait until later when I’ve got some quiet time.

In the mean time the little one and I are having a slow day, watching Annie and eating toast thinking about getting dressed ( her not me… not yet mummy I’m drawing). It’s a busy time of year for us all so it’s nice to have some downtime, well for us anyway… my husband is working hard delighting the folk of Bath with his busking and won’t get a proper break til after Christmas 🎄

So I feel very lucky. ❤️🙏🏼

‘Tis the season for giving – FREE PATTERN ALERT!!!!

xmas decs

Because I know you have ooodles of time on your hands at this time of year…..

Seriously though.  These decorations are super simple to make and suitable for absolute beginners.  If you have youngsters around it is an ideal project for children learning to knit as they will be able to build on their basic knit stitch and they are quick to make.

It’s worth making a set of ‘stealth needles’ or using shorter needles as the size of the projects mean they can get bit lost on long needles.  The decorations make ideal keepsake or if you’re feeling super organised this Christmas, a gift decoration.   At any rate, you will treasure these decorations for years to come, unlike the the bumper box set you got last year…..

So click on the link below for the FREE PATTERN.

Never too young!

I had a lovey time at the market at Bovey Tracey. It was a great atmosphere and dry!

A family came to look at my stuff and one of the young boys was really into sewing and was also interested in the knitting. He said “I have a really good question, how do you start from nothing?” What a good question!

I was delighted to be able to show him how I cast on and I hope he finds my YouTube tutorials helpful. I love how many young people, boys as well as girls are interested in knitting – a whole new generation. I’m honoured if I can be in some small way a catalyst to inspiring a love of creating and making things. 🙏🏼❤️
