I was winding this skein into a ball… it was going well. Then I realised I’d lost an earring – it was an anniversary present and I love it so I and got up to look for it .. I’m hoping it’s in the house somewhere but I didn’t find it. I came back to the yarn and LOOK!! What the actual flaming flip happened here! I would blame the cats but they’re outside. Honestly it wasn’t like this when I left it!
Funny thing is that I don’t mind untangling yarn… especially when I’m feeling a bit jangled, like when, for example I’ve lost my special earring. It’s almost as if the physical act of unravelling, following the yarn helps me straighten things out and find a quiet place.
I’ve knitted a hat for my friend and yoga teacher. It’s a lovely soft hat in a vintage heathery Aran. I hope she likes it. I certainly do which is a relief after the run on ‘Bad idea knits’ I’ve ended up with of late…
Today is about writing up the pattern so I can knit it again. I didn’t keep any notes while knitting except the bare minimum eg number of stitches cast on, when the pattern repeat started etc so it’s best I write it up quickly so I don’t forget.
I’ve got to be honest, it’s a flaming ball ache… it involves counting – lots. Have I mentioned before that I hate counting. I lose track all the time and so have created all sorts of weird and wonderful methods of annotating the work prior to writing it up in more traditional knitting terms.
Then in the middle of it all, just when I wanted to print off what I’d got so far (I’m not very good at reading from a screen) the internet went down and the printer is one of these wireless affairs. I get so cross which is I know is counterproductive and anyway it’s not like it’s a surprise; technology breaks down all the time. Why do I expect it to be faultless?!?!
Anyway I’ve done it now. Time to do some knitting and relax I think!!!
This two sided knitting lark really is a meditation! It really is terribly simple, you just have to keep your mind in the moment, on the task.
You know when you’re meditating and you wander off thinking about this and that…. and then you catch yourself and bring yourself back to the breath or a sound …. Only with the two sided knitting my little wanderings are all too evident as the wrong coloured stitch waving at me!
I’m getting really good at undoing stitches vertically and reworking the them the right way. Well I thought I’d give it a go after undoing several whole rows which had me in a real pickle!
And the work is giving me so many ideas, how I could use this fabric, and has set me wondering how I can develop it. Of course there’s colour work, textures etc etc. Of course I’ll be looking to the YouTube community for help and ideas but also the ‘making it up as I go and seeing if it works’ method that serves me well (even if it doesn’t work).
I’d love to hear what other people are working on 🙏🏼❤️
Last week I was planning… this week I’m catching up with all the stuff that didn’t get done over the busy pre Christmas period.
It’s killing me, returning a big pile of overdue library books, getting my hair cut, taking the cardboard mountain to the recycle centre, dropping off several bags of stuff at the charity shop… blah blah blah…. I just want to be DOING, MAKING…. 😱😱
The saving grace of this ‘admin day’ as I’m calling it is putting my much loved boots in for repair, and the cobbler says they can be fixed AND I get to pick them up on Saturday. YEY!
I know though that all of this is necessary, clearing the decks ready for the work to come. Later today I will be able to look through the quotes for my projects without all those ‘things to do’ distracting me. So however much it feels like I’m ‘not getting anything done’ or that I’m ‘standing still’ which are my 2 main frustrations, I know that I am. I know that progress does not always look like progress and doing doesn’t necessarily mean progress. And above all if there is one thing I need to learn it is patience!!
At the weekend I split milk all over my ‘phone. No point crying over that one, the screen is gradually becoming less and less responsive but this gentle decline is at least giving me enough time to back everything up! Anyway a new one will be winging its way to me drekly. As well as some software which will hopefully transform the design process – well that’s the promise! I’ve also bought my husband his Christmas present which is super exciting as I know he will love it. I will want to give to him as soon as it arrives; hopefully I can be restrained and keep it a secret until Christmas Day!
I found the pattern notes I’d made for the gauntlet mittens that I sold before working out the pattern. With these scant scribbles and the photo I should be able to work it out. BUT THE MOST EXCITING THING…
THE ERIKA KNIGHT WOOL HAS ARRIVED!!!!
I’m working on some new pieces and I am so excited. Almost frenzied. This is how it feels when I’m working on something new. I feel like I’m fizzing inside! There’s a beautiful muffler and a lovely gentle contouring hat, plus a cape and so much more…. I’m making a start….. and smiling from ear to ear.
NB, please forgive any typos or spelling – my screen is dark blue and some of the touch screen areas don’t work xx
